Sciatica
Sciatica is one of the conditions we treat most often at THRIVE Physical Therapy + Wellness. Many people describe the pain as sharp, shooting, or burning, often beginning in the lower back or buttock and traveling down one leg. This discomfort may be accompanied by numbness, tingling, or noticeable weakness in the affected leg or foot. Symptoms usually occur on only one side and can vary from mildly bothersome to completely incapacitating.
What is Sciatica Pain?
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes irritated or compressed. One common cause is a herniated or bulging disc that places pressure on the nerve as it exits the spine. Poor posture, prolonged sitting, and improper lifting mechanics can also increase strain on the lower back, contributing to nerve irritation. Other factors—such as degenerative disc changes, trauma, or the physical demands of pregnancy—may also lead to sciatic symptoms. Because the underlying causes can differ widely, identifying the true source of the irritation is key to finding lasting relief.
What are the symptoms of Sciatica Pain?
Sciatica typically creates pain that travels from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg, following the path of the sciatic nerve. The discomfort may feel dull and achy or sharp and electric, and it may worsen with certain movements such as bending, twisting, or sitting for extended periods. Many individuals also notice tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness in the leg or foot on the affected side.
These symptoms can make even simple tasks difficult. Sitting at a desk, getting out of the car, walking long distances, or picking something up from the floor can become uncomfortable or overwhelming. Over time, the limitations caused by sciatica can interfere with work, daily tasks, and recreational activities, reducing overall quality of life.
What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Back Sciatica?
At THRIVE Physical Therapy + Wellness, we take a targeted and evidence-based approach to resolving sciatica rather than relying on short-term treatments like traction, heat, ultrasound, or electrical stimulation. While those methods may provide temporary comfort, they rarely address the mechanics that create or perpetuate sciatic nerve irritation.
We begin with a detailed mechanical examination known as MDT (Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy). This evaluation helps us identify the exact positions or movements that provoke or relieve symptoms. Understanding these patterns allows us to create a treatment plan specifically tailored to your body’s responses.
In addition to MDT, we incorporate nerve mobilization techniques designed to restore normal movement of the sciatic nerve along its pathway. Restricted nerve mobility is a common contributor to sciatic pain, and improving this function can significantly reduce symptoms.
Our assessment also includes a close examination of the muscles and soft tissues that support the lower back, pelvis, and hips. Tightness, weakness, or imbalance in these structures can place additional stress on the sciatic nerve. Addressing these issues helps prevent the problem from returning.
Treatment often includes personalized exercises aimed at improving mobility, restoring strength, and correcting faulty movement patterns. Manual therapy techniques—such as targeted soft-tissue work and joint mobilization—further support healing and reduce discomfort.
Our goal is not only to alleviate your current symptoms but to help you understand how to manage your condition effectively and prevent future flare-ups. At THRIVE Physical Therapy + Wellness, we focus on long-term recovery so you can return to your daily activities—and the things you enjoy—without the burden of sciatica.
