THRIVE Beyond Cancer
Dr. Mary Kaye Rueth is the only PORI-Certified Oncology Rehabilitation Specialist in Naples.
Historically, many individuals never received support for the lingering side effects of cancer treatment. At THRIVE, we take a different approach. Our comprehensive WellCare assessment helps us identify key concerns such as fatigue, pain, mobility limitations, and other treatment-related changes. By looking at the whole person—not just individual symptoms—we’re able to address the long-term impact of cancer therapies in a more effective, integrated way.
THRIVE Beyond Cancer
At THRIVE Physical Therapy + Wellness, a core part of our mission is supporting individuals who are navigating life during or after cancer treatment. Patients who have received chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery often face unique physical challenges, and many benefit from ongoing guidance to understand and manage the changes happening in their bodies.
Chemotherapy, for example, frequently leads to profound fatigue and can contribute to neuropathy — sensations like numbness, tingling, or altered sensitivity in the hands and feet. These changes may reduce strength, disrupt balance, and make everyday tasks more difficult, especially when it becomes hard to feel the ground beneath the feet or manipulate small objects.
For individuals recovering from surgery, our focus shifts to restoring mobility and supporting proper healing. We provide techniques to soften and mobilize scar tissue and use manual lymphatic drainage to promote healthy lymph flow. This type of care is particularly important for breast cancer survivors following lumpectomy, mastectomy, or combined surgical and radiation treatment.
Radiation therapy can also result in long-term tissue changes. It may create dense or fibrotic areas that limit movement and contribute to secondary orthopedic problems. Women who receive radiation to the chest wall commonly develop tightness that restricts shoulder motion. By addressing these tissue restrictions and enhancing lymphatic movement, we help patients regain comfort, mobility, and function.
